Sonya Walger, known to legions of Lost fans as Penny, has been cast as Freya in Amazon Prime Video's upcoming God of War TV series.
Walger joins Ryan Hurst as Kratos, young actor Callum Vinson as Atreus and Homeland's Mandy Patinkin as Odin — Freya's ex-husband. That's according to Variety, which broke the news of Walger's casting today.
An official blurb for Freya describes the character as "a Vanir goddess and princess who practices powerful, ancient magic. She is also Odin's ex-wife and the former Queen of the Valkyries in Asgard, a title bestowed upon her on her marriage day."
"She is strong, insightful, and filled with regrets," the description continues. "When Freya's unhappy marriage to Odin ended with her being exiled, she was cut off from her family, as well as her native land, Vanaheim. Freya has lived alone in Midgard for a century, a recluse in a hidden glade, feared by humans, and often referred to as the Witch of the Woods."
Lost fans will know Walger as Penelope "Penny" Widmore, the long-suffering partner of hatch dweller Desmond. Walger featured on Lost in a recurring role from its second season onwards, appearing in a more than a dozen episodes including the fan-favorite season 4 story The Constant — widely considered one of the series' best.
Production is now underway on the God of War series, but reception to the first image of Kratos and Atreus hasn't necessarily been positive. Many fans have already weighed in and leveled criticisms at the photo. Meanwhile, God of War creator David Jaffe wasn't exactly mincing words when he said of Hurst's Kratos, "Could you find a picture that doesn't look like he's s***ing in the woods, cuz that's what the picture looks like."
Other previously announced roles for the series include Max Parker as Heimdall, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, while Teresa Palmer is Sif. Amazon and Sony have not announced a release date for God of War but, while we wait, it's worth checking out our interview with Ronald D. Moore from SDCC 2025, where he talked about his vision for the series.
